Matt. 24.32-42 Now from the fig tree learn her parable: when her branch is now become tender, and putteth forth its leaves, ye know that the summer is nigh; 33 even so ye also, when ye see all these things, know ye that he is nigh, even at the doors. 34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all these things be accomplished
('all these things' are the events of the 7 year tribulation described by Jesus in vs 4-31)

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

36 But of that day and hour
(of the beginning of 'all these things' which is the context of what Jesus is talking about here)

knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only. 37 And as were the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man .
(As the judgment of Noah's flood caught the unbelieving world unaware so shall the rapture catch this unbelieving world unaware. This is different than the physical return of Jesus at the end of the age when 'every eye shall see' and 'all the tribes of the earth shall mourn;' the physical return of Jesus to earth(Matt 24.30); which is to say that all the world will be anticipating and will see the physical return of Jesus to the earth. There are two totally different mind sets of the world at the two different 'comings' of Jesus)

40 Then shall two man be in the field; one is taken, and one is left: 41 two women shall be grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left
(The rapture of the elect at the beginning of 'all these things')

42 Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh.

In summary: In this portion of scripture Jesus has just finished describing the main events of the 7 year tribulation. He gives warnings; he gives the parable of the fig tree. He warns us to be ready at all times for no man knows the exact hour when all these things will begin. But the rapture will be a major sign that all these things, the judgment on the world, has begun.
