In February of 2009 Bloomberg reported that Baxter “accidentally” send vaccine material containing both live Avian bird flu and seasonal influenza to multiple laboratories worldwide. A laboratory decided to test the vaccine on it’s ferrets, but the ferrets all unexpectedly died. It must be noted that Baxter has made a “mistake” like this before. Blood products produced by Baxter once containd HIV. Thousands of haemophiliacs died due to this, and many went on to infect their spouses.

The BIG story this morning, economic in nature, is that "Swine Flu Grips Ukraine". It's in the Wall Street Journal, after all, so it must have something to do with economics, right?

And indeed it does: Ukraine is something of a bread basket area to Russia populated by smart, hard-working people. Since independence in late summer 1991, Ukraine has been evolving into the 29th largest economy in the world on a mix of agriculture, aerospace, and manufacturing while being a critical chunk of real estate to the Russians since goods like natural gas from Russia to Europe through its borders.

As of this weekend, 53 people have died of swine flu, some by what's described as bleeding lungs which hark back to the 1918 Spanish Flu and cytokine storming where the body's defensive mechanisms got crazy and attack the host body itself.

Responding to the situation, the government is closing down schools, some businesses, banning large gatherings, and is trying to buy another 700,000 doses of Tamiflu from Roche. A stock to watch?

The thing we probably should watch over the next few days is how the neighboring countries fare. Already Hungary's health minister says the "Ukraine flu epidemic to create emergency in Hungary" as it may also do in Romanian, Moldova, Slovakia, Poland, Belarus, Russia, and anyone pulling into port from he Black Sea or the Sea of Azov.

Now we go into deep background mode on this with an email I received from a particularly well informed reader who expects this will be one for the history books that should be watched closely:

I note that the first cases appeared a few days ago, just the length of the incubation period from October 25th.
OK, a Mossad microbiologist warned two months ago that a new deadly flu bug was going to be released into Ukraine in two months. He got the place right, the bug right, and the time right.

The sequence of all 8 pieces of RNA in the virus that caused the "Spanish flu" pandemic of 1918-1919 is public knowledge. A long dead Inuit woman buried in the permafrost was dug up and the virus taken from her body a couple of years ago and the RNA pieces were sequenced. Quite simple to synthesize these 8 pieces with widely available commercial machines and reagents. Then transfect mammalian cells with the RNA genes to obtain the intact, fully functional, virus. Another quite well known technology. Then grow all you want in fertilized chicken eggs or a mammalian immortal cell line. More quite well known technologies.

What scares the sh*t out of me is that the bleeding in the lungs is exactly what killed a lot of folks in the 1918-19 pandemic. See the great book "The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history? ." People would literally fall dead walking across the street. The bleeding out of the lungs was most likely the result of a "cytokine storm" that so increased the vascular permeability in the air sacks that blood filled the lungs. The reason why the mortality in the 1918-1919 pandemic was concentrated in the 18-25 yo cohort was that they had the most active immune systems.

Now I've NO conjecture as to who may have let this loose or why. But I do know that the technology is widespread to replicate the 1918-1919 virus that killed 2-4 million Americans and about 50 million world wide. And folks only traveled by ship in 1918. And there is NO vaccine for this flu type.

Hopefully we will know in a couple of weeks the sequences of the 8 RNA pieces in the Ukraine virus. I'll bet the farm that it is a replicant of the "Spanish Flu." If so, the odds are totally infinitesimal that this was NOT a deliberate bioweapon release.

I note that long haul truckers will simply go home and park their rigs if this flu reaches the USA. And exactly what reason do we have to suppose that it will be confined to Ukraine? The average city has 3 days of food. Connect the dots... please...............

On 30 October 2009, the Ministry of Health of the Ukraine announced the confirmation of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection by RT-PCR in eleven out of 30 samples obtained from patients presenting with acute respiratory illness in two of the most affected regions. Tests were performed in two laboratories in Kyiv, including the National Influenza Centre. Confirmatory tests will be performed at one of the WHO Collaborating Centres for Influenza.

The situation is quickly changing with increasingly high levels of acute respiratory illness (ARI)/Influenza-like-illness (ILI) activity being observed in Ternopil, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Chernivtsi regions. The higher levels of transmission in these regions corresponds to an increased number of hospital admissions and fatalities associated with severe manifestations of acute respiratory illness.

It took Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel, The Jungle, to awaken the public to the dangers of sausage and the meat-packing industry in general. Another example, if I can be so presumptuous, is my 1977 novel Coma, which opened readers' eyes to the dubious side of the medical profession after years of misleadingly warm and fuzzy treatment of doctors and hospitals in novels, movies, and TV series. Today, there is a crying need for a new such socially conscious novel to shake up the complacent public about the high risk of an imminent, serious pandemic. And I don't mean the much-publicized swine flu. While the world media has obsessed, and rightfully so, about this fast-spreading illness, I'm worried about the next crisis, something much deadlier and much more catastrophic, indeed the kind of crisis most people wrongly believe could not happen in this day and age. If I were the author, this urgently needed novel would have to be called Plague.

Soon I saw a number of sheep appear behind the Lion, and He rose to His feet. The sheep came and began to make row after row of lines behind the Lion, each line being a bit longer than the one before it. Soon it stretched out and from the front looked like a solid V, with the Lion standing at the point of the V. The sheep looked quite dumb, and very content.

This is the answer to these things that devils of false gods are putting out into our world. It is so important for us to have the appropriate response and word for others where these things are concerned. I am fully prepared to stand and proclaim at 100% that the answer for the saints is here in my post, and there is no other answer. We are able to be wise as serpents and gentle as doves. We need not get all charged up about these headlines, but we must draw close to the Lord and pray that He will guide us around these events that are unfolding, this biological travesty among others, included. This is really good, she's a benedictine nun who before becoming a nun she was a internal medicine physician in Spain. She explains really well what's going on w/ the swine flu, she says it's less harmful than the regular flu. I've only watched the first one, but there's 5 more.

I don't watch the tv news, but I consider drudgereport to be the most efficient at getting the latest news the fastest- why aren't they discussing the flu/sickness spreading in the Ukraine? That is the country Joseph Moshe said it would be the target of a bioweapon. Are we now seeing this to be true? They haven't received the swine flu vaccine yet as I've read this morning, don't know that to be true, but this has a deadly twist, the hemoraging of the lungs.

I can't find much about it in the MSM at all. It's shocking to me with all the hype of the swine flu and how big a deal they made every time someone new was diagnosed or died. It was ridiculous. Now a case actually justifies letting people know, I mean 600,000 possibly infected and 95ish dead is significant, and they are silent. It's mind boggling.

My husband's theory is political. Possibly they don't want us sending stuff to Ukraine to aid them for whatever reason and that's why we're not told about it here.

Reducing child deaths from pneumonia

US$ 39 billion needed to prevent and control the world's leading killer of young children

2 NOVEMBER 2009 | GENEVA | NEW YORK -- A comprehensive action plan that can save up to 5.3 million children from dying of pneumonia by 2015 is being launched today by the WHO and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The GAPP has a three-pronged vision:

1. Protecting every child by providing an environment where they are at low risk of pneumonia (with exclusive breastfeeding for six months, adequate nutrition, preventing low-birth-weight, reducing indoor air pollution, and increasing hand washing);

2. Preventing children from becoming ill with pneumonia (with vaccination against its causes: measles, pertussis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae b, as well as preventing and treating HIV in children, and providing zinc for children with diarrhoea);

3. Treating children who become ill with pneumonia with the right care and antibiotics (in communities, health centres and hospitals).

The cost of implementing the GAPP by scaling up the recommended measures in the 68 high burden countries is estimated at US$ 39 billion for 2010-2015. The costs are expected to double over the six-year period, rising from an annual need of US$ 3.8 billion in 2010 to US$ 8.0 billion by 2015.

Specific targets and goals to be reached by 2015 under the GAPP strategy are to expand coverage of all relevant vaccines and exclusive breastfeeding rates to 90%, and raise the level of access to appropriate pneumonia case management to 90%. This will lead to a reduction in child pneumonia deaths by 65% and cutting the number of severe pneumonia cases in children by 25%, compared to 2000 levels.

In Lake in the Hills, Illinois, police will conduct a drill to combat a fictitious pneumonic plague on Saturday. “The Lake in the Hills Police Department is carrying out the test as part of a grant from the McHenry County Department of Health for its emergency health plan. In case of a biological terrorist attack or widespread disease outbreak, the site would be able get medicine to the community, Lake in the Hills Chief of Patrol Services David Brey said,” reports the Northwest Herald. Brey said officials picked pneumonic plague for the scenario “so it would have nothing to do with the swine flu.”

KIEV, Nov. 5 – Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on Thursday changed her stance towards accepting vaccination after the World Health Organization warned that two more strains of flu, including the bird flu, may strike Ukraine.

The change comes three weeks after the start of a deadly swine flu epidemic in Ukraine that is believed to have killed about 100 people so far and infected hundreds of thousands.

“We cannot relax even for a moment because the World Health Organization predicts two more waves of flu, including the bird flu MEL WHAT IS THIS THREATS?
, are expected in Ukraine,” Tymoshenko said at a meeting with local administration in Chernivtsi.

“There is no alternative to vaccination,” Tymoshenko said. “The entire world is going this way, but we have to analyze the tactic and approach towards the vaccination. When the country is going through difficult times, like today’s epidemic, we have to think how to develop a strategy towards protecting the people.”

The meeting comes a day after Tymoshenko admitted she was not vaccinated and that she prefers “like all other people” to rely on garlic, onion and lemon as a way of preventing the flu.

Her comment, made in Ivano-Frankivsk, the epicenter of the swine flu, was extremely controversial and misleading as the vaccination is the only known way of preventing the flu.

The rate of vaccination in Ukraine is extremely low – at about 58% - as many people believe vaccination was not effective or even dangerous. This perhaps explains why Ukraine – unlike other countries in the region - is especially hard hit by the flu.

Experts say the rate of vaccination must increase to at least 90% in order to prevent the spread of viruses causing flu.

President Viktor Yushchenko, in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday, urged the people to get vaccinations as soon as possible after consulting their doctors.

Ukraine has been battling the outbreak of the swine flu for the past three weeks, with measuring mainly including shutting down schools and banning pubic gatherings.

The World Health Organization, which sent a team to Ukraine to investigate the illnesses, said it has reasons to believe the outbreak may be caused by the swine flu, also known as (A)H1N1.

Separately, the European Union will send its own team to Ukraine with experts expected to arrive on Friday on mission to check on the spread of the epidemic and to provide recommendations.

“The vaccination is needed, it will be conducted against both, the seasonal flu and the Californian flu,” Oleksandr Turchynov, the first deputy prime minister, said Thursday. Officials often refer to the swine flu in Ukraine as the Californian flu.

“Due to political speculations, a black zone around the vaccinations has been created in Ukraine,” Turchynov said. “This problem was shifted from expert to political sphere. The number of people getting vaccination has dropped considerably.”

Meanwhile, Tymoshenko said the number of new cases involving flu-like illnesses has slowed down after three weeks of rapid growth, perhaps suggesting the epidemic may be leveling off.

The pattern of previous seasonal flu epidemics suggests that the spread of the disease will stop and will be subsiding over the next three weeks.

“I think that we have reached more or less clear stability,” Tymoshenko said. “Now there will be three weeks that the epidemic will gradually subside and we will see the situation returning back to normal.” (tl/ez)

Withheld Ukraine Sequences Raise Pandemic Concerns

Right now we know that many clinical specimens and viruses have been sent to one of the WHO collaborating centres for further study. We don’t know the results of those studies, and it will probably take a couple of days for the full analysis of those viruses to be available. But in the meantime, what we do not have is any evidence of viruses there or anywhere else as showing any big mutations. I raise this point because I have seen in some media reports that there are reports that WHO or other groups are saying that there are mutations and I want to point out that these are rumours and factually, untrue.

The above comments from Keiji Kukuda offer some general comments on the Ukrainian H1N1 sequences at Mill Hill in London. He specifically says WHO doesn’t see any “big” mutations in the samples being sequenced, which would refer to reassortment or Tamiflu resistance. However, the changes seen in Ukraine do not require “big” mutations. Small mutations, such as SNP can have profound effects for a virus like pandemic H1N1.

That virus normally circulates in swine, and has recently jumped to humans. It already has many characteristics with the 1918 pandemic strain. Both are swine H1N1 that jumped to humans. Such species jumpers can increase efficiencies with small changes. One good example is position 627 in the PB2 gene. That position comes in two forms. When there is glutamic acid (E) at that position, the PB2 enzyme copies the viral genetic material most efficiently at 41 C, the body temperature of a bird. However, if that position has a lysine (K), the enzyme is most active at 33 C, the temperature of a human nose in the winter. The swine H1N1 has an E, which may be why it goes well in lung, which is 37 C and closer to the optimal replication temperature of 41C. However, a single change that produced the most efficient replication at 37C would lead to even higher levels in the lungs, which could lead to frequent cytokine storms, like those in 1918, instead of the less frequent level seen in Ukraine.

However, the rapid spread of H1N1 in Ukraine (see map), coupled with the high frequency of hemorrhagic pneumonia raise concerns that a small change is leading to a more virulent virus. Similarly, the rapid spread of the virus could also be affected by a small change in another gene, such as HA, which controls entry of the virus to cells and influences tissue tropism.

Mill Hill has acknowledged that they have at least 15 H1N1 positive samples from Ukraine, which would identify a Ukranian specific change. The delay in the announcement of sequence results raises concerns that such changes have been detected, and such changes are undergoing further analysis.

The number of cases in Ukraine continues to expand. The number of patients with H1N1 symptoms is now approaching 1 million. Cases have been increasing at almost 200,000 per day, so it is likely that tomorrow’s report will have over 1 million cases. This rapid spread increases concern that the 15 sequences at Mill Hill contain one or more of these small changes, which has led to a delay in the announcement of sequence results.

More detail on the sequences at Mill Hill is overdue. The rapid spread of H1N1 in Ukraine demands rapid sequence results. Continued delay will only increase concerns.
