What's your favorite comfort food?

Postby daffodyllady on Fri Nov 19, 2010 3:28 pm

I am sitting here eating a favorite from my old-fashioned childhood...

Buttered toast in scalded milk, with a fried egg (over-easy) laid on top.

You really should try it.

So, what's YOUR favorite comfort food?

Grilled cheese sandwich w/Campbell`s Tomato soup. Or home made Chicken & Dumplings. Or home made Chicken Noodle soup. Or . . . .ANYTHING ! Been on a diet for 6 months now. Can`t eat homemade cakes, biscuits, yeast rolls, or any of my favorites, since I can`t tolerate gluten anymore.

burien, I'm sorry... I should be off them, too. Actually, I am off sweets completely. But the breads somehow have a hold on me that I can't seem to shake right now. It's the carbohydrate foods that are usually the comfort foods, because of the way they promote serotonin production.

I remember how, when I was low-carbing carefully, I got to the point where breads didn't tempt me at all. It took me about a month. But I have read that in cases of actual addiction, it takes the brain 3 years of total abstinence to recover.

In the meantime, maybe other comfort foods can be chosen... such as stevia-based sweets, or hot soups made with real cream and protein.

Thanks for the reality-check, burien. I admire your sticking to it. You have inspired me to go for it, and to lean on the Lord for my comfort.

I must be addicted, Daffodyllady. I`m still craving buttered biscuits and cornbread. Just smelling them baking and having the oven on in the winter is comfort. I grew up in a home with a wood cookstove as well as gas stove, and there is nothing that compares to a baked potato from a woodstove, or cornbread made in a cast iron skillet. But I guess I`m even more attached to those foods because of growing up with them. Even a cold, home made biscuit with jelly would thrill me right now. But the Lord has helped me learn to resist. After a lot of prayer. I`ll pray for you, too.

If it's serious enough, Ice Cream is my comfort food.....and since we don't keep this in the house, it has to be serious, as I have to drive to Baskin Robbins or to the grocery store to get it.....but, this is also how I know this is my favorite comfort food, because if I feel really stressed out, I locate my husband and make the announcement that "its time....."

Nothing much better! And my mom would cook beans on the warm morning stove during the winter, "yum!", you guys are making me hungry!...

Speaking of milk I just read this comment on CNN Health.

burien, there are a lot of gluten free flours out there that will allow you to have gluten free bread in your life.

Chocolate is my favorite, as is fresh cornbread crumbled into a glass of milk, and of course chocolate ice-cream.. or a chocolate malt... which leads to malted milk balls... oh man... now i gotta go to the store.

I've been doing pretty good, the doctor was pleased, I've lost almost 14 pounds, which I am happy about, but I do miss the milk products, its in almost everything, hubby loves pizza but hasn't been to bad about not having it as often as I can't have it..
I can tell the diet is working, it doesn't feel like I have a rock stuck between my ribs on the right side and my right side doesn't feel so full, I actually feel better..
My next appointment isn't till middle of July to see if my liver enzymes have dropped, but I'm already convinced its going to be fine...

As a full-time caregiver to my food-fussy 91 year old Mom, who has serious chewing problems and who hates anyone's cooking except her own, and takes out her frustration with her rapidly disappearing ability to be independent on the only person in the world who cares enough to take care of her...my definition of "comfort" food is any food that is shopped for/prepared/and cleaned up after...by SOMEONE ELSE!!!

Can you say, "Do they DELIVER?"

Daffy, Thank you, sweet lady. I believe you would. As I recall you are usually in the middle of helping a dozen or so people at any given time. :blessyou:

:praying: Please forgive my complaints, Dear Heavenly Father. As you know, I have been ill. I am mending nicely, thank you..but I am tired and cranky. Please have patience with me as I let off steam with moan and groan on this forum. I dare not let Mom know that at times, caring for her is a bit more than I can handle physically/emotionally. It would break her heart. In Jesus's wonderful name I pray for Your strength to carry me when mine has run out of gas.
