What Herb thinks
2007 Charlemagne Prize

The timing is interesting. With Germany about to take the EU's rotating Presidency, it's being announced that Javier Solana has won the 2007 Charlemagne Prize Read it here  I  Here  I  And here. And, at the time of writing, all the reports I've managed to find have been in German. If you read on, you may find reason to think you know why.

The Charlemagne Prize is given in recognition of outstanding achievements towards reuniting Europe and helping the world realize peace. If you have seen my DVD, you are aware that in 2000 former President Bill Clinton was presented with this prestigious award Read about it here. In 2004, the prize went to Pope John Paul II Read about it here. Now, for 2007, it's going to the EU's first High Representative, Javier Solana.

Why is the timing interesting? It's interesting not only because there is a covenant with many and seven-year confirming program due to begin in 2007, but also because the EU is in deep crisis. Just last month the EU's leaders and key players in the field of energy met in Brussels to discuss the EU's energy security. The funny thing is, they all gathered together in the Charlemagne Building Read about it here. And, just a few days ago, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and, among other things, they discussed Europe's urgent need to speak with one voice Read about it here

If they were to choose someone, who might it be?

Stay tuned!
