If you're an American, you're familiar with how, when confronted with someone he disagreed with, former president Ronald Reagan would shake his head and say, "Here you go again." That's the way I feel after reading a report in the Financial Times about the EU's new constitution titled, "Giscard outlines 'humanist inheritance'" (Read about it here). I feel like shaking my head and saying, "Here you go again." Why do I feel this way? Let me try to explain: According to the Bible, this isn't the first time all of Europe was in the grip of spiritual darkness. And, it was the light of Christ that began setting Europe free. The Apostle John put it this way: "I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shinning (1 John 2:8 New American Standard Bible). The darkness John was referring to was Satan's control over the minds and body of men, which at that time was being exercised through his pagan Roman Empire. In the terms of Bible prophecy, Rome was the sixth head of the dragon. However, when Satan used the power of his Roman Empire to unjustly crucify Jesus the innocent Son of God, Satan brought judgment on his own head. I believe that's when the sixth head of the dragon was crushed. And from that day on, Satan's power over humankind was limited to those who rejected Jesus and His heavenly kingdom. That's what the Apostle Paul was thinking about when wanting to encouraged the fledgeling Christian church in Rome he said, "I want you to be wise in what is good, and innocent in what is evil. And the God of peace shall soon crush Satan under your feet (Romans 16:19). And, if you know your history, that's exactly what happened. As the light of Christ began shinning across Europe, Satan's darkness began fading and his sixth head -- his pagan Roman Empire -- fell. Unfortunately, the spiritual darkness that created Rome never went away -- it just changed its tactics. And, if God's people allow it, that darkness will return to enslave Europe once again. That's why the Apostle John warned us: "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God: because many false prophets have gone into the world. By this you know the Spirit of god; every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ (Israel's Messiah) has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; and this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world (1 John 4:1-3). So, it's being reported Giscard is finally ready to deliver his final draft of his new constitution. And, according the Financial Times report, "God and Christianity have failed to find a place" in Giscard's constitution for the new, super EU. Instead, Giscard's constitution only refers to the old darkness of Europe's Greek and Roman heritage, and the so-called "Enlightenment." This godless constitution will be delivered to the EU heads this June. And, after making their revisions, Giscard's constitution will at last be presented to the EU heads at their December summit in Rome. If adopted, the Constitution of Rome will be born. But, although its constitution will be born, Rome won't be born. Rome will be reborn. And, I can hear him saying it now: "Here you go again."
