They are calling it the European Unions's "big bang" enlargement (Read about it here). Upon completion of the addition of the 10 new nations, the EU will become an economic and political entity bigger than the US, Canada and Mexico put together (Read about it here). If you are a Bible believer like I am, from the days of your childhood you knew this event would someday happen. Why? Because of that Old Testament book of Daniel. I'm talking, of course, about that wonderful story about the king with the weird name -- Nebuchadnezzar, the king of the ancient Babylonian Empire (Daniel chapter 2). Let's take a quick look at the story: While Nebuchadnezzar was thinking about the future, he had a strange dream. He saw a huge statue shaped like a man. It had a head made of gold, a breast of silver, a belly of brass, legs of iron, and feet and toes of iron and clay. As the king was watching, a stone struck the statue at its feet and shattered it into dust. Then the stone grew to become a great mountain and filled all the earth (Daniel 2:31-35). In the story it turns out that God was revealing the future to this pagan king. The statue represented what Jesus referred to as the "time of the Gentiles" (Luke 21:24). And, the image of the statue revealed that there would be four Gentile kingdoms rise to rule over the world before God establish His promised eternal kingdom to Israel. The head of gold represented Nebuchadnezzar and his Babylonian Empire. Its silver arms and chest represented the Medo-Persian Empire that followed. The belly of brass was the Greek Empire. And the iron legs were the Roman Empire. When we look at history, it’s amazing to see how accurate the king’s dream proved to be. Following the Babylonian Empire came the Medo-Persian Empire. After that came the Greek Empire. Then came the Roman Empire. Now here's where things become interesting for us today. For many years now it has been commonly accepted among students of Bible prophecy that the statue's feet and toes of iron and clay describe an end-times revival of the old Roman Empire under the leadership of a 10-nation alliance. Now here we are, thousands of years later in our modern scientific age, and the unbelieving world leaders actually have a name for this event so clearly foretold in the book of Daniel -- they're calling it the EU's "big bang" enlargement. I'm sorry, but I have to chuckle a little. You see, I have another name for it. I call it a "big bang" fulfillment of prophecy. 01-29-03
