This isn't a story I've been paying much attention to. But, according to a report in the EUobserver, perhaps I should have been paying more attention. The EUobserver says the European Commission will be taking legal action against EU member states for suspending the rules of the Growth and Stability Pact. Why should this interest us on FulfilledProphecy.Com? Because the member states who were behind this suspension of rules were France and Germany. And these are two anti-American nations who have been threatening for some time now to create their own deeper union and defense group. Here's how it happened: As members of the eurozone (the 12 EU nations who use the Euro), France and Germany were required to keep their budget deficits below a certain level. This was something they apparently couldn't do. So, instead of facing the consequences and paying their fines, they bullied the other member states to suspend the rules for them. This action naturally angered some of the other member states who struggled under the same rules to meet the requirements. And, it also angered the European Commission who's responsibility it is to enforce the rules. Besides being a blow to its authority, the Commission also saw what the member states did as illegal. Now it looks like the Commission has decided what to do about it -- it will be taking the member states to court to have their decision to suspend the rules reversed. Needless to say, France and Germany don't like the idea very much. On the other hand, some of the smaller member states love the idea. They see the step necessary to keep the bigger states in line. To make matters worse, this legal battle is coming at the same time the EU heads are attempting to bridge their differences over the EU's new constitution. In other words, the EU's very existence could be at stake here. Question: Will this be the final straw that breaks the EU beast's back? Will France and Germany decide its time to do what they've been threatening -- remove themselves from the EU and create their own union? And if so, what will the Commission and the other member states do? Will they do what President Lincoln did when his southern states decided to leave the United States union? Is this the beginning of an EU Civil War? Stay tuned! 01-14-04
