What Herb thinks
Flying Christians

Yesterday's commentary was about something the Israeli High Court calls, "leaping conversions." As I pointed out, the way I see it, the Israeli government is trying to find a way to extend the right of return to more Jews, while at the same time, not opening the door to Jewish Christians.

Naturally, for a Christian Gentile like me, the idea of leaping Jewish conversions can be very amusing. In my mind, if I allow myself, I can see Jewish converts from around the world leaping around like frogs. But, this is the carnal and unreasoning side of my nature. Both my spiritual and logical side tell me to cool it. The fact is, we evangelical Christians can be equally amusing to outsiders. While we laugh at the idea of leaping Jews, they laugh at the idea of flying Christians. They're equally amused by our rapture doctrine -- the idea that we Christians will all suddenly fly up into the air to meet Jesus.

As God's people, we know there is no way for us to avoid the ridicule of the godless. In fact, we are forewarned in Scripture that, in the latter days, mockers will come. However, that doesn't mean we should make it easier for them. And, it is my fear that is exactly what we are doing.

Take a look at today's prominent television evangelists. Have you ever noticed the way they dress? They don't wear what you and I wear. They like to dress up in the strangest clothes they can get their hands on. Why is that? Well, I believe it's for the same reason the Catholic leadership likes to dress strange. These so-called spiritual leaders wish to set themselves apart from we lessor believers. They want us to think that they're something special. Why? Because, they want us to follow them and not Christ.

How about all the false miracles? Don't you suppose the thinking world laughs. And, rightly should they. Snake oil is snake oil, even when it has a Christian label.

Here's my point: Our faith wasn't founded on myth and weak logic. It was founded squarely on the revelation of God that had come down from long before. When Jesus walked this earth, He wasn't just doing His own thing in a post-modern world. He was fulfilling all the prophecies that were written about Him in the Jewish Scripture. If the religious leaders of His day couldn't see that, it certainly wasn't His fault.

It's the same today. The prophecies of Scripture are once again crying out as they did in Israel two thousand years ago. Some are seeing it, some are not. Others are pointing their finger at us and mocking. Friends, let's stop making it easier for them.

It's time to get serious.
