I don't agree with all the views expressed in this two-part article Part 1 I Part 2. But, there is an important international player who may -- it's the EU's Javier Solana. I say this because, one of the authors of the article is Alastair Crooke, a former Middle East advisor to Solana. When the terrorist organization Hamas won the Palestinian elections, many interpreted it as a fatal blow to the Middle East peace process. But, I saw it different. My thinking was, if there was any political group that could pull it off with both Israel and the Palestinian people, it was Hamas. Now, it appears I may not be alone in my reasoning. If you recall, it wasn't that long ago Solana secretly met with Hamas leaders. At first he denied it. Then, when pushed by BBC News, he admitted it. He said, however, that he didn't meet with Hamas without the knowledge of his peers in the international community. In other words, without coming right out and saying it, Solana suggested he was acting on behalf of the Quartet. Even if he wasn't, this article may reveal something about Solana's thinking. And, it may reveal how he thinks peace can be achieved. You see, it took the election of an old warrior, Yitzhak Rabin, to start the Israeli people down the road of trading land for peace. And, it took another old warrior, Ariel Sharon, to accomplish the historic withdrawal from Gaza. In the same way, it may take a terrorist political party, like Hamas, to lead the Palestinian people into a final agreement with Israel. Now, all we may need is a player savvy enough to seize the opportunity. And, something tells me we have one. 03-31-06
