The EU's High Representative, Javier Solana, reminds me of the man on the high wire. While balancing the interests of the 25 member states -- sometimes on the opposite sides of the pole -- Solana's job is to safely carry the EU's Foreign and Security Policy down a swaying, common wire. One mis-step, and the EU's whole common foreign and security policy will come crashing down around him.

Here we have a report where Solana is trying to find a consensus among the EU heads about how to lift the EU's arms embargo against China, without damaging the Atlantic alliance Read about it here. The bottom line is, the EU still needs America. And, in light of China's recent anti-secession law aimed at Taiwan, America is naturally upset about the EU lifting the embargo.

On the other hand, the EU heads really, really want the lucrative contracts lifting the arms embargo would bring. So, Solana's job is to find a way to allow the EU heads to have what they want, without doing too much damage to relations with America.

And, here's where Solana's balancing act gets even more difficult. End-times Bible prophecy strongly suggests, behind the smiles and handshakes, certain elements within the EU may have an unsaid anti-America agenda. These factions want the EU to replace the United States as the world's dominate super power. In fact, they desire to restore the old Roman Empire. If that's the case, not only does Solana have to walk a swaying wire, he has to keep his act going in a direction that is favorable to this unsaid agenda.

The Bible further tells us that, someday, this high wire act will begin crossing a seven-year chasm we students of prophecy know as the 70th week of Daniel. Scripture also tells us, in the middle of the chasm, something will happen that will causes the man on the wire to suddenly drop his balancing pole and continue on his own. The world will watch and wonder, to see if he makes it all the way across. But, the Bible tells us that he won't.

So, will Solana end up being the man on the wire?

I only know he is now.
