Fischer's Mission Impossible

The BBC is reporting that German foreign minister, Joschka Fischer, is on a "mission impossible" (Read about it here).

According to the report, Fischer was sent to Washington in an attempt to heal the damaged relations between Germany and the United States caused by the Iraqi War. If you recall, Germany and France joined forces in the UN Security Council and prevented American and Britain from passing their resolution authorizing the war.

Not only did this opposition from so-called allies surprise Washington, it angered Washington. And, the anger is still burning.

Now Germany is sending Fischer in an attempt to soothe over the hurt feelings. However, for Fischer, there is more at stake than just US/German relations.

As I've been reporting, a slugfest has begun between the EU's High Representative, Javier Solana, and Germany's foreign minister Joschka Fischer. The fight is over which one of these EU heavyweights will become the foreign minister for the new, super EU.

But the battle between Solana and Fischer is bigger than these two men. You see, Solana has, for the moment, come to represent those EU member states who want to maintain good relations with the United States and NATO. On the other hand, Fischer has at the same time come to represent those EU member states who wish to separate from Washington as much as possible.

Naturally, America and her allies in the EU are looking more favorably at supporting Solana's bid to become the EU's new foreign minister (Read about it here).

So, the BBC is reporting Fischer is going to Washington in an attempt to heal the damaged relations between the United States and Germany.

I agree: He's on a mission impossible.
