This is interesting. Representatives from the State of Israel and the Palestinian Authority met with top Spanish officials yesterday. According to this report, these top Spanish officials included King Juan Carlos, Prime Minister Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, and the EU's High Representative Javier Solana Read about it here. Also at this meeting was Francisca Sauquillo, president of an EU socialist peace movement known as Movement for Peace, Disarmament and Liberty. Sauguillo is reported to have said: Today it is more essential than ever to have a unanimous international declaration condemning the serious violations of human rights and international law perpetrated by the Israeli government. It appears the Madrid bombings may have been another amazing success for terrorism. Like the unexpected collapses of the Twin Towers buildings in New York, the Madrid bombings may not have only removed Spanish troops from Iraq, they may have also shifted Spain's Middle East policy entirely against Israel and in favor of the Palestinian cause. The difference is Spain is once again demanding Israel return to the undefendable borders that existed before 1967. This means, Israel would have to give up all the land captured in the Six Day War -- including East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. This brings up the question: How will Israel defend herself? The answer is, she will need protection from the international community -- the same gang that wishes she would slide into the sea. What do I think will happen? I still suspect Israel and the Palestinians will both be offered future membership into the EU. It will be a powerful incentive for peace. It will be a promise not kept. 05-20-04
