This is strange. An influential Norwegian political leader named Thorbjorn Jagland wants to give the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union (Read about it here).

I can hear it now:

Will the EU beast please rise and accept this year's award [applause].

This crazy idea reminds me of an interesting encounter Jesus once had with some religious leaders of His day. These leaders said to Jesus:

What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness; as it is written, "He gave them bread out of heaven to eat."

Jesus answered:

Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven (John 6: 30-31 New American Standard Bible).

Why does this event so long ago in Israel remind me of those who want to give the EU the Nobel Peace Prize? Because, in my opinion they're making the same mistake those religious leaders were making -- they're giving credit to men and not God. 

No, it wasn't the EU that brought peace to Europe -- God brought peace to Europe. But the EU will gladly take the credit.

It's the nature of the beast.
