What Herb thinks
Play Dough

Whatever happened to our reverence for God's word? Some today handle God's word so casually, you would think it was just play dough in the hand.

Take the New Apostolic Reformation Movement for example. Almost all their messages are constructed out of allegories from Old Testament accounts. Never mind the Scriptures they are using are taken out of context and misapplied. For them, Scripture is just play dough in their hand.

Friends, this is what I think. We're experiencing a form of post-modern Christianity today. This is a Christianity that suggests the word of God doesn't really mean what it says on the surface. So, instead of carefully letting Scripture interpret Scripture like we used to, we allow our subjective feelings and desires to be our guide and interpreter.

For example: Recently, I read a long list of Scriptural proofs someone posted to support a particular doctrine. Although I don't neccessarily disagree with the doctrine, I pointed out not one of the Scriptures listed actually provided proof. I was told it didn't really matter. Why? Because this person had other subjective and allegorical reasons to believe the doctrine. If this isn't an example of our post-modern thinking today, I don't know what is.

Now, before you say you wouldn't do such a thing, think again. I'm speaking about a very sincere and devout Christian here -- one that I've learned to admire and respect. It's just that he believes so strongly in this doctrine, he can't see the errors in the construction of his argument. Like I said, I believe this is the result of our post-modern Christianity. And to some degree, whether we admit it or not, we're all becoming its victim.

But, if we're in the end-times, the rise of a post-modern form of Christianity is to be expected. Speaking again about the foretold falling away, the Apostle Paul warned young Timothy:

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Fortunately, Paul also told Timothy what to do about it. Paul said:

I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction (2 Timothy 4:1-4 New American Standard Bible) .

Friends, let's give God's word the honor it deserves. It's not just play dough in our hand.

We're to be the dough in His hand.
