Adam's Angle
The Proof is in the Pounding

Imagine yourself hiking in some wild corner of the Alaskan wilderness. A storm is moving in, and you've got to race back home before it hits. Your camp is just ahead but, unfortunately, it's on the far side of a rushing river. There is no bridge, but you know you have to cross the river if you're going to make it to safety.

Fortunately, you don't have to go it alone. Two mountain men step out from behind a pine tree and offer to help you. The first one looks a little tattered. His hair is matted and wet --as are his clothes. He's barefoot and you can see some cuts and scars on his feet and ankles. He tells you, "I can get you across, but you'll have to leave your backpack behind."

The second mountain man looks different than the first. He's totally dry and looks strong. In fact, he's even wearing a neatly pressed T-shirt with your camp's logo printed on the front and a shiny new pair of Gore-Tex treated mountain boots. He says to you, "Don't listen to him. You can bring your backpack. I'm the one who can get you across."

Which one would you want to help you?

If you weren't sure, you might ask them what proof they had so you should trust them. In response, the clean-cut mountain man #2 pulls out a Princeton diploma and says, "Look! I got my doctorate in mountaneering and rural engineering."
