You got to laugh at this: The EU beast is sitting on the fence! It seems the International Court of so-called Justice has ruled illegal the fence the Sharon government built to protect Israelis from acts of Palestinian terror Read about it here. And the EU beast, the same 15 headed creature that pushed the Rome Statute treaty that created this court, doesn't know how to react Read about it here. The Gaza pull-out plan is at a critical stage. If the EU supports the ruling, it could disrupted a peace deal that has been hard and long in coming. If, on the other hand, it refuses to support the ruling, it will be violating its new security doctrine. A key part of this doctrine is the creation of a new international order in which the International Court plays an important part. It's going to be interesting to see how the EU beast handles this. For one thing, now it has 25 heads to keep happy, not just 15. And, they have different opinions on this issue. For another, time is running out. The EU's goal is to have a Palestinian state of some kind in place by 2005. That's not far away. Monday, the EU's 25 Foreign Ministers will meet in Brussels. So, the EU's Secretary General and High Representative, Javier Solana, will be holding a meeting of the Council of Ministers. Like I said, it's going to be interesting to see how the EU beast handles this. For now, it's sitting on the fence. 07-09-04
