What Herb Thinks

A Sleeping Giant

I thought the United States might be finally waking up. If you recall, in October the Bush Administration called an emergency meeting of NATO over the EU's quest for an independent military command. And as I write, President Bush and his Secretary of State Collin Powell are both in Europe in what I fear is a desperate attempt at saving US interests in NATO.

Well, according to this report from the EUoberserver, America may not be waking up. It's being reported that after consultation with the European leaders, Collin Powell (Herb Photo) said the US is now "more comfortable" with the idea of an independent EU military capacity within NATO (Read about it here)

Not only that, Powell was even reported to have said:

We support all the initiatives that are underway to expand the capabilities of the European Union in the security field.

Here's what I think: The Bush Administration is being deceived in the same way the prior Clinton Administration was.

As I wrote in my book, back in October 2001, I had the chance to personally ask former Secretary of Defense William Cohen about the EU's implementation of Assembly Recommendation 666 in the last half of 2000 (Herb Photo). I reminded him he warned if the EU leaders created an independent military command, NATO would become a "relic of the past." I told him since the European leaders went ahead and did it anyway, will NATO become a relic of the past? Cohen looked at me and said:

In my opinion it hasn't happened.

What he said startled me. I had just finished writing an entire book about the EU's creating its own military wing. My face must have shown my disbelief. Cohen looked at me again and said something that revealed a piece of inside information the Lord must have wanted me to have. Cohen said:

What the Europeans have done is just for show. They want the European people to think they have their own military.

In other words, when the Clinton Administration approached the EU leaders with their concern over the EU creating their own military wing when implementing the 10-nation's Assembly Recommendation 666, the EU leaders said it was just for show. And, the Clinton Administration bought it.

I wonder what the EU leaders are now telling the Bush Administration?

Yes America may be a giant, but I fear America is a sleeping giant.

Stay tuned.
