What Herb thinks
The Final Argument

J. P. Moreland is a Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University. And, he's a dude you don't want to debate.

Some believe it's wrong for Christians to study philosophy. That's because, the Apostle Paul warned young Timothy about its dangers. Paul said:

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ (Colossians 2:1 New American Standard Bible).

I agree that philosophy can be dangerous. But, so can a car when driven unwisely. That doesn't mean we don't drive one. Philosophy can be hard to define. The way I see it, philosophy is just the quest for truth. It's the use of our God given logic to understand the meaning of our existence and the creation we are part of. I don't see anything wrong with that.

In fact, I believe all Christians, whether they know it or not, are philosophers. They are seekers of truth. The only difference is, unlike the secular philosophers in most of our colleges and universities, the Christians have found the truth they were seeking. Jesus said:

This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God (John 3:19-21).

If you understand what Jesus said, you are an accomplished philosopher. You have found what all the secular philosophers are still looking for. Congratulations!

What does this have to do with a Professor of Philosophy by the name of J. P. Moreland and his arguments against evolution? Well, although I believe Moreland's arguments are very good Read about it here, I don't believe they are God's final argument. I believe God's final argument against evolution will be Bible prophecy. Through Isaiah God's says to the unbelieving:

"Present your case," the LORD says. "Bring forward your strong arguments," the King of Jacob says. "Let them bring forth and declare to us what is going to take place; As for the former events, declare what they were, that we may consider them and know their outcome. Or announce to us what is coming; Declare the things that are going to come afterward, That we may know that you are gods (Isaiah 41:21-23).

Here God challenges the false gods and religions to do what He's doing -- He's picking a people and a land and declaring in advance what's He's going to do with them. Friends, that's what Bible prophecy is about. It's about the God of Israel doing in our day what He long ago said He was going to do.

Where does evolution come into this? Well, today evolution is the main argument against the God of the Bible -- the God of Israel. And, it's interesting to see how in the book of Revelation we read an angel will fly in midheaven with an eternal gospel to preach. What is that gospel? That gospel is the gospel of the Creator of all things. Here we read:

And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people; and he said with a loud voice, "Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters." (Revelation 14:6-7)

You see, this angel will be flying around with this message while the Antichrist and his 10 kings are waging their war of terror against the Lamb (Jesus). This suggests to me one of the strong arguments being used at this time against the knowledge of God is evolution -- that there is no creator.

Later, in Revelation chapter 19, we read about the destruction of Mystery Babylon -- which represents false religion. We also read about the marriage of the Lamb to His pure bride -- which represents true religion. Interestingly, it's in the passages about Christ's true bride we read:

Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy" (Revelation 19:10).

Friends, we may think we can't stand among the debaters of this age and win. But, I want you to know we can. You see, that final argument has already been won.

It's been won by Jesus.

And, the spirit of prophecy.
