What Herb thinks
The Gospel

FulfilledProphecy is an end-time ministry. That means, the people who come here are interested in the subject of Bible prophecy, and how it may relate to our time.

If you visit our discussion board, you will notice we don't all believe the same. There is no cookie-cutter eschatology (end-time study) practiced here. In fact, that's one reason FulfilledProphecy exists. I wanted a place where people could go to discuss prophecy without fear of my censorship. As a result, FulfilledProhecy's discussion board has turned in to a kind of  "wild west" of end-time eschatology. I think it's great. But, naturally, not everyone agrees even on that.

I don't normally respond to something said on our discussion board. But, this time, I felt a response was in order. The suggestion was made that the message at FulfilledProphecy was evolving into another Gospel. And, this idea was then even confirmed by a few other posters. In the eye's of these posters, FulfilledProphecy was drifting away from believing in a salvation by faith alone. Instead, FulfilledProphecy was adding eschatology to the Gospel message.

The poster was sincere. But, the poster was wrong. For that reason, I decided to do a commentary about what I believe about the Gospel of our salvation. After all, this is not only what we are to preach -- this is what we are to hold fast and not let go.

Although it is true that we are saved by faith alone through faith (Ephesians 2:8), that statement is not the Gospel message. The Gospel message is the object of our faith -- it's what we place our faith in. And, it's very simple. So we wouldn't become confused, the Apostle Paul even lays it out for us. Paul says:

Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also (1 Corinthians 15:1-8 New American Standard Bible).

Here it is folks -- the Gospel message of our salvation. And, in other places, Paul instructs us not to add anything to it, or take anything from it. I may take some hits on this, but that's why I don't even like the terms, "Full Gospel," "Restored Gospel," or "Four Square Gospel." In my view, these terms all suggest that what Paul said in the above passage is not complete. These terms suggest that there is more that needs to be added.

Back to that passage in 1 Corinthians: Notice how may times Paul said, "according to the Scripture." The Gospel message that we are now to hold fast, not add to, or take anything from, was the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. And, Paul and the First Century Christians recognized it. I believe that explains why the angel told the Apostle John, "The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10)."

Friends, the same Scripture that foretold Jesus' first coming, foretells His second. As sure as He appeared the first time, He'll appear the second.

So, while we hold fast the Gospel message, let's also stay tuned.

They did.
