Hitler wasn't defeated by the allied powers. Hitler defeated himself. War historians tells us Hitler made one strategic wrong move after another. And, here's the scary part. In each case the source of Hitler's errors was something the Bible tells us we all have. It was his deceitful heart. I went to bed last night with a disturbing thought. It was the realization the time has come of which Apostle Paul warned. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul said: I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths (2 Timothy 4:1-4) New American Standard Bible). Paul's relationship to young Timothy has always touched me. It was more like a father son relationship than teacher pupil. As a father, who once was a son, Paul's letters to Timothy have always had a special place for me. You see, like Timothy, I too was rasied to know the Scriptures. And, I too had faith pasted down from a godly mother and grandmother. The first thing Paul tells Timothy is to preach the word. If you recall, this wasn't the first time Paul said this to Timothy. There's no question as to where Paul wanted Timothy to focus -- on the word of God. Not only was Timothy to focus on God's word, Paul instructed Timothy to continue doing it no matter what -- in season or out. In other words, whether his listeners wanted to hear it or not. Then he explained why he was telling Timothy to do these things. It was because a time would come when God's people would turn away from sound doctrine and those who teach it, and instead turn to myths. Today, we may call it fiction. What does this have to do with Hitler? Like I said before, the allies didn't defeat Hitler. What defeated Hitler was his own deceitful heart. And, the Bible tells us that our hearts can be just as deceitful. In fact, that appears to be precisely what Paul was saying to Timothy would someday happen. God's people wouldn't be defeated by outside enemies. They would be defeated from within by their own hearts. Yes, this is what I went to bed thinking last night. Trying to keep the focus on Scripture and sound doctrine today is nearly impossible. It seems many of God's people are more interested in uncovering truth about secret societies and following various conspiracy speculations than coming to know the message of Scripture. Others, a little more sophisticated, are busy acquiring Bible teachers for themselves that will tell them what they want to hear. In both cases, the result is the same. God's people are being led astray from what the Scripture actually says to follow after myths. I know, I promised my next commentary would be about the amazing events that have occurred and how they may relate to Bible prophecy. But, after last night, I can't help but feel a little sorry for myself and think that since nobody is going to listen anyway, why bother. Then I remember Paul's words -- preach the word, in season and out. For the time will come. 06-12-06
