What Herb thinks
Things That Matter

Sometimes, we have to sit down and decide what are the things that really matter to us. At the top of the list, of course, is our relationship with Christ. If not, it should be.

I often think about what our Lord had to say in His letter to the church at Ephesus. In the book of Revelation we read:

I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have perseverance and have endured for My name's sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love (Revelation 2:2-4 New American Standard Bible).

You see, we can be right about everything, and still be wrong. No, it's not that Jesus doesn't care about issues of truth and sound doctrine. Here He praises these Ephesian believers for fulfilling their responsibilities in this area. The problem was, they had forgotten why they were doing it. The reason they were defending the truth was so they, and others, could find and have a relationship with the Author of Truth Himself -- Jesus.

This brings me to another Scripture that I often think about. In the Gospel of John we find Jesus saying:

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life (John 5:39-40).

That's what we do, isn't it? We fill our head's with Scriptures and commentaries and books on Bible prophecy, looking for that piece of knowledge that will make us better disciples. But, are we willing to go to Jesus? Do we still love Him like we did at first -- when we spent so much time with Him?

I ask myself this. You see, I've been a Christian for a long time. So, sometimes I have to stop what I'm doing and examine myself. In fact, this is exactly what the Apostle Paul said we should do. Paul said:

Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test (2 Corinthians 13:5)?

I certainly don't want to fail that test. I need Jesus in my life more today then ever. So, sometimes I have to sit down and decide what are the things that really matter to me. Is it my family, my job, my ministry?

Or, is it still Jesus.
