What Herb thinks
Up To Us

We Christians in America are free to express ourselves. When you think about it, that's a scary thought. You see, we can say things that are true and we can say things that are false -- it's up to us. And, it's also up to us to know the difference.

The problem is knowing truth in a confused world isn't always easy. Even the things that we think we know we may not. But, unfortunately, there is no way to avoid our responsibility. According to God's Word, it's still up to us to know the truth and to hold it fast.

This morning we're confronted with more confusing news. It seems our old friend, Valery Giscard d'Estaing, is back on the political scene Read about it here. If you recall, d'Estaing is considered the father of the EU's new -- and yet unratified -- constitutional treaty. Not long ago FP's commentaries where filled with the details surrounding the EU's attempt at creating a constitutional union on the order of the one that we have here in America. As you may recall, d'Estaing's dream was shot down, not by the heads of the EU states, but by the voters -- a mistake I doubt they'll make a second time.

Perhaps even more confusing is the news about mega pastor Rick Warren's sudden and unexpected trip to Syria Read about it here. Taken by itself the the news wouldn't be especially surprising. But, in light of the what's going on in the world -- and in particular in the region -- it's quite intriguing. We already know that due to a dangerous turn of events in Iraq the Bush Administration may be desperate. Word is the the Bush appointed Baker-Hamilton Study Group will be recommending negotiations with Syria and Iran. A prudent leader doesn't appoint a commission to find an unexpected answer. And, since many consider Warren the new Billy Graham, it's only natural to expect that at times like these Warren's services might be called upon.

Further evidence that there's something big going on is provided by the news that Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is responding to Bush's change in tactics by calling for a three-way summit with Syria and Iraq Read about it here.

No, it's not easy to figure it all out. And fortunately, we Christians don't have to. You see, God knows that the world we live in is difficult and confusing. He doesn't expect us to do what we can't do. But, that doesn't mean we can kick back and do nothing. You see, as Christians He has given to each of us a unique talent and He has placed us exactly where He wants us. When our Lord returns, we will all stand before Him without excuse.

It's my view He will return soon. I believe everything points to that conclusion. Over thirty years ago I came to faith in the Bible because of Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth. What convinced me was the part in Hal's book about the rebirth of Israel and the revival of the old Roman Empire -- two things that I could see for myself. Today we have another fulfillment I find equally convincing. Now the entire world is seeing the dispute over Jerusalem as the key to establishing global peace -- just like the Bible said.

No, we don't need to figure it all out. There are really only a few things that we need to know. One of those things is the Bible is true -- Jesus truly is the risen Son of God. The other thing we need to know is that we still have an urgent message to get out.

And, our Lord says it's up to us.
