Some things change. Some stay the same. In the case of the so-called EU 'big three," things are going to change. It appears that all three leaders -- Frances' Jacques Chirac, Britain's Tony Blair and Germany's Gerhard Schroeder will soon be stepping aside Read about it here I And here I And here. This brings us to what will stay the same. I suspect that the EU's Javier Solana will continue just as he has since taking his new posts within the EU back in 1999. The reason this may be interesting is because, as you know, I've been wondering if these three leaders -- the EU "big three" -- might actually become the three kings who are to be subdued by the coming Antichrist. In Daniel we read about a revived Roman Empire in it's final -- 10-horned -- stage. Here the Scripture says: After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast -- terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns. While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully (Daniel 7:7-8 New American Standard Bible). What many failed to see is that, when Javier Solana appeared in his powerful, new EU offices, he also appeared among a 10 nation military alliance known as the Western European Union (WEU). The EU "big three" are each members of the 10 nation alliance. And, these same three have formed a directorate in order to prevent Solana from doing what he was hired to do -- lead the EU member states in a common foreign and security policy. In other words, they've been in Solana's way. Now, it appears the "big three" may be fading from the picture. At the same time, it is widely believed that the West's war against terror is entering a new, more dangerous phase. Even as the fires in Paris yet smolder, three American hotels are bombed in Amman Jordan killing near 70 innocents. These recent tragic events bring our leaders a real dilemma. How are they going to fight an escalating war against terror while their hands are being tied behind their backs via the democratic process? When they go home to their people requesting the tools they think necessary to fight and win this war, they are turned away. And, if they persists, their political career may even be at stake. How about the 10 Brussels Treaty Powers (the WEU nations)? What will they do. Their mutual defense agreement remains. An attack against one, is an attack against all. What will they do? Friends, this is what I suspect. We're talking about war and national security. If the WEU nations feel that they can't get their people back home on board their war against terror, they may regroup in Brussels and find a way to do an end run around their national parliaments. Yes indeed: Some things change. Some stay the same. And, I suspect someone will be waiting. 11-10-05
