There is an obvious choice before the EU's leaders. Will they hold to the democratic values of their Atlantic Alliance, or will they bend to accommodate this new energy rich dictator from Russia? You see, that's really what Friday's summit was about. Under Vladimir Putin, that old Russian bear has reappeared. But, instead of using tanks and planes as before, this time the bear is using energy. That's why the old EU member states are more tempted than the newer EU members only recently freed from the bear's jaws.

When you think about it, now the EU's leaders may be facing a second choice. You see, these 25 leaders are in quite a dilemma. They desperately need a secure supply of energy. Nevertheless, they don't want to fall under the bear's foot. What's needed right now is a strong leader to rally and guide them. So, that could be their second choice: Will they submit to the bear or name a Roman prince?
