What Herb thinks
What We Really Are

We have a lot of new people at FulfilledProphecy.Com. And, unlike some other popular end-time discussion boards, we allow different views on Bible prophecy to be debated, provide a few rules are followed. The first and most important rule is love. Jesus said:

Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love (John 15: 9-10 New American Standard Bible).

Now, it's important for us to know Jesus' commandments. Is He talking about the Law? If you recall, Jesus taught we can't put new wine into old wine skins. No, Jesus meant just what He said. He was talking about us keeping His commandments. And, a few moments later, He reveals His foremost commandment to us who believe. He says:

This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you (John 15: 12).

Unlike some of our modern Bible teachers, the Apostle Paul understood Jesus' teachings in the Gospels to apply to the church as well as Israel. That's why Paul told the Corinthian believers:

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

One of the hardest things for me to understand is the lack of love being shown by so many of today's believers. In fact, too many times the stronger the doctrinal views held by a believer, the weaker their love toward others. Why is this? Spiritually speaking, something's wrong.

Why do we get angry at a brother or sister with whom we disagree? If we're right, and they are wrong, we should be all the more concerned about them -- not hate them.

Like I said, FulfilledProphecy.Com is becoming fairly popular. That means, we have people coming here who have different opinions about prophecy. This situation naturally can lead to disagreements. So, what I desire to see is our love for others growing instead of our tempers flaring. Here's where that kind of growth can happen. Here's where what's really inside us can be exposed and corrected.

Keep in mind, if we are in Christ, we are already one. Why? Because, Jesus prayed to His Father that we would be one, as He and His Father are one (John 17: 15-21). My point is, our minor differences in prophecy doesn't change that reality. If we are in Christ, we are one.

I don't want to do like some of the owners of other discussion boards have done in order to keep the peace. Instead of letting love be the rule, they have ruled out disagreement. This is the opposite of what Christ taught us to do as Christians. In fact, Jesus said we are to even love our enemies. So, why can't we do as He commanded and love each other?

You see, when we can't love each other, it reveals what we really are.

Let's obey Jesus.
