What Herb thinks
What to Think?

Evangelical Christians have a lot on their plate to think about. After being credited with returning George W. Bush to the White House, now they have to make sense of the consequences. According to these reports, president Bush will dedicate his last four years to creating a Palestinian state Read about it here  I  And here. And, for the majority of America's evangelicals who believe God gave the land of Palestine to Israel, if Bush succeeds in his plans it could bring God's judgment on their nation.

There was a day I would have condemned Bush's actions and not voted for him. In fact, I withheld my vote from Bush Sr. because it is widely believed his administration is responsible for Israel starting down that road of trading land for peace (I give details in my book). As far as Bush W. is concerned, it's not like we didn't know what he was up to in the Middle East. If you recall, one of the first things the new Bush administration did was support a resolution in the UN Security Council calling for a Palestinian state. That being the case, we can't say we didn't see today's news coming.

I must admit, I saw it coming. So, being among those evangelicals who believe God gave all the land of Palestine to Israel, how could I still vote for George Bush? Let me try to explain:

I'm older now and I see things differently then when I was younger. Perhaps one of the biggest changes is I'm not as quick to judge anymore. I recall the time I stormed out of a church to find another. My reason? The pastor had health problems and, in my view, he couldn't fulfill his spiritual service. You know what? The day came when the responsibility of leading a small church suddenly fell to me. The problem was, I was sick. The doctor couldn't find what was wrong with me and I was so weak I had to lean on things to stand. It was in this condition I had to stand and preach. After struggling to get through a long service, I learned someone had become very angry with me. Why? Because, I had forgotten their prayer request. God taught me a lesson that day -- one I would never forget.

Here's my point: Just because we see someone who appears to be fulfilling Bible prophecy -- like Bush is -- that doesn't automatically make that person our enemy.  The simple truth is, God is in the future. He knows what's going to happen. Some things happen for bad reasons, some for good reasons. Nevertheless, God sees it all. And, He tells about some of these things in ancient Scripture. Why? To prove to the unbelieving world that He's God, the Bible is His Word, and He's waiting for us in the future.

The way I see it, God has granted us a little more time. From days of old He has revealed to our generation things He wants told. That's our job. That's what prophecy is really about.

That's what I think.
